Industrial Fishing
The Industrial Fishery in Seychelles is a vital part of the nation’s economy, encompassing both Purse Seiners and Industrial Longliners. These fisheries play a crucial role in the sustainable management and exploitation of tuna resources within Seychelles’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Purse Seiners
Purse Seining is a method used to catch large schools of fish, primarily tuna. The fleets involved in this fishery are highly efficient, employing advanced technologies to locate and capture fish. These vessels often work in coordination with fish aggregating devices (FADs) to enhance their catch rates. The catches are predominantly processed for canned tuna, which is a significant export product for Seychelles.

Industrial Longline
The Industrial Longline fishery, on the other hand, is dominated by South East Asian fleets. These vessels focus on catching high-value frozen tuna, primarily for the sashimi markets. There are currently 127 industrial longliners licensed to operate within and beyond Seychelles’ EEZ. Most of these vessels are either foreign-owned or operate in partnership with Seychellois investors.
