‘May our oceans continue to bless us with abundance and vitality’ – Minister Ferrari |21 November 2023
Seychelles Nation
“Every year on November 21, nations worldwide celebrate World Fisheries Day. As the Minister for fisheries the theme ‘Treasure of our Oceans’ with the motto ‘Harmony beneath the waves, sustainability in our hands’ is extremely important to our country. World Fisheries Day provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the vital role that our oceans play in our lives and to recognise the importance of sustainable fishing practices.
“Seychelles, as an ocean state, understands the profound significance of our marine resources. Our fisheries sector is not just an integral part of our daily lives, but it also contributes significantly to our economy. Fishing is not merely an occupation; it is a way of life for many of our citizens, providing them with livelihoods and sustenance.
“One cannot underestimate the economic impact of the fishing industry. It is a key driver of our nation’s foreign exchange earnings and a cornerstone of our economy. The revenue generated from our fisheries supports various sectors, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. Moreover, it plays a crucial role in ensuring food security for our people.
“As we celebrate our fishing industry, we must also recognise our responsibility to protect and preserve the very oceans that sustain us. ‘Sustainability in Our Hands’ is not just a motto but a call to action. We are proud to be pioneers in the field of sustainable fisheries management. Our commitment to responsible fishing practices is a testament to our dedication to safeguarding our marine ecosystems for future generations.
“Through comprehensive policies, stringent regulations, and international collaboration, we have made giant strides in ensuring that our fisheries remain sustainable. We have invested in research and technology to monitor our fish stocks, minimise bycatch, and reduce the environmental impact from the sector.
“As we move forward, let us remember that the treasure of our oceans is not an unlimited resource. It is a delicate ecosystem that requires our care and attention. Together, as a nation, we can continue to strike a good balance between reaping the benefits of our fisheries and preserving the harmony beneath the waves.
“In conclusion, as the minister I will encourage all Seychellois to take pride in our fisheries sector and its contributions to our nation. Let us commit to sustainable practices that will secure our ocean’s treasures for generations to come. “Harmony beneath the Waves,
Sustainability in Our Hands” should guide our actions as we pursue this fantastic journey.
May our oceans continue to bless us with abundance and vitality.
“Happy World Fisheries Day!”
