The high commissioner (HC) of Zambia to Seychelles, Joyce Kampapa Kasosa, paid a courtesy call on the Designated Minister and Minister for Fisheries & the Blue Economy, Jean-François Ferrari, on Thursday last week.
HC Kasosa was accompanied by Kaluwe Wasamunu, the Tourism and Multilateral Attaché, whereas Minister Ferrari was joined by the director of the Fisheries department, Sheriffa Morel, and the Third Secretary from the department of Foreign Affairs, Davis Mathiot, as well as the international cooperation officer of the department of the Blue Economy, Gabriella Gonthier.
During the meeting, the high commissioner expressed Zambia’s keen interest in learning sustainable fisheries practices, including how to control stocks and prevent illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) practices that lead to the depletion of stocks.
She also expressed her desire to enhance collaboration within the fisheries sector, particularly in the development and growth of aquaculture.
In response, the minister highlighted the need to create fishermen-oriented organisations that work in parallel with the national efforts of the government.
He also emphasised the importance of providing supporting infrastructure and ancillary services that can complement the efforts of the fishermen, as well as including fishermen in policies and discussions related to the fisheries sector.
The meeting served as an extension of the deepening of existing bilateral relations between Zambia and Seychelles.
It is noteworthy to mention that Zambia has provided assistance to Seychelles in sectors such as education and health in previous years, and this meeting further underscores the commitment of both countries to strengthening their relationship and promoting mutual cooperation.
The high commissioner expressed her appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality extended by Seychelles and reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to fostering meaningful collaboration in the fisheries sector for the benefit of both countries.
HC Kasosa and Mr Wasamunu concluded their courtesy call by expressing optimism for the continued collaboration between Zambia and Seychelles in the fisheries and blue economy sectors.
